The rural water supply demonstration project in Srekor Village is one of the projects of Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Special Fund implemented by Changjiang River Scientific Research Institute, Changjiang River Water Resources Commission (CRSRI). In 2020, the project team of CRSRI, cooperated with Sanghe Secondary Hydropower Co., Ltd (SSHC), had already accomplished a rural water supply demonstration project in Srekor Village, Steung Treng Province, which remarkably benefited the local people’s livelihood. In 2021, according to the local public opinion survey, the project team decided to continue the construction of rural water supply demonstration projects in Srekor Village, which including the construction of the 6 rural water supply demonstration projects (hand pressure wells).
Since February 2021, Cambodia has struggled with a new wave of COVID-19.The prevention and control measures have been implemented strictly throughout the country. The project team of CRSRI once again faced the problem of being unable to go abroad. According to the local pandemic prevention requirements of Cambodia, Hydropower LS2 Dam implements full closed management and the local government can only be contacted by telephone. All the team members must be put under quarantine after returning from outside, so the progress of the project has been seriously affected. The project team responded positively to the difficult situation and kept working on the project construction. At present, six rural water supply demonstration projects (hand pressure well) have been successfully implemented, and the construction of relevant facilities will continue in the future. It is expected that the project handover will be completed by the end of December this year. After the completion of the project, the water supply guarantee capacity of Srekor Village will be greatly improved, the problems of insufficient water supply and substandard drinking water in the village are expected be solved in the coming future.
“Lancang-Mekong Sweet Spring Action Plan--Lancang-Mekong Nations Rural Water Supply Security Technology Demonstration Project” a Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Special Fund Project, jointly proposed by China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR), CRSRI, Lancang-Mekong Water Resources Cooperation Center (LMC Water Center) and China Water Resources Beifang Investigation, Design and Research Co. Ltd. (BIDR). The project uses “safe water supply in rural areas” as the entry point for Lancang-Mekong water resources cooperation, aiming to improve the construction and management capabilities of local rural water supply and to provide typical experience and technical support for rural water supply safety in the Lancang-Mekong region through technology demonstration and promotion in typical areas. The implementation of the water supply demonstration project in Srekor Village, Cambodia is of great significance for the improvement of the local rural economy, local people’s well-being, and the China-Cambodia water conservancy cooperation.
