Founded in 1987, the Institute of Hydroecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of Water Resources (hereinafter referred to as the Institute of Hydroecology) is a public scientific research institution with 162 employees specialized in hydroecology protection and restoration. It is the supporting unit of the Key Laboratory of Ecological Impacts of Hydraulic-projects and Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystem, Ministry of Water Resources and the Hubei Engineering Research Center of Hydroecology Protection and Restoration. It is the affiliated unit of the Specialized Committee of Hydroecology, Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society. It has built the Hydroecology and Biological Resources Research and Test Base of the Ministry of Water Resources, the “Belt and Road” River and Lake Ecological Protection Technology Joint Training Center and the Hydroecology Monitoring Center of the Changjiang River Basin, published Journal of Hydroecology.

Participate Situation

Since the launch of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation mechanism in 2016, under the leadership and support of the Ministry of Water Resources, the Changjiang Water Resources Commission and the Lancang-Mekong Water Resources Cooperation Center, the Institute of Hydroecology has actively participated in the Lancang-Mekong water resources cooperation and has achieved fruitful results. In August 2019, it organized and implemented the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Special Fund Project on technical training for water conservancy talents, undertook a technical training course on hydroecology monitoring and evaluation for 22 trainees from Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Viet Nam to demonstrate typical cases of hydroecology protection and advanced technologies of hydroecology monitoring, which exchanged the concept of hydroecology protection and restoration among China and the Mekong countries, and promoted people-to-people communication.

In the next step, the Institute of Hydroecology will actively explore innovative technical support models, and further strengthen cooperation with the Mekong countries on hydroecology protection and restoration and biodiversity protection to make contributions to the scientific use of water resources and the protection of the ecological environment of the Lancang-Mekong River.
