Bureau of Hydrology, Changjiang Water Resources Commission is a professional hydrology organization to carry out river-basin hydrometric network construction, hydrologic, water resources and water environment monitoring, river channel and reservoir survey and sedimentation study, hydro-meteorological forecasting, water resources investigation and hydrologic analysis and computation, hydrologic telemetry system design and development and to provide reliable information for comprehensive river-basin management, flood control and drought prevention, hydraulic structure construction, water resources development and the sustainable use of water resources in the Changjiang (Yangtze) River basin.
Established in February 1950, BOH is headquartered in Wuhan with seven subordinate bureaus or water environment monitoring centers located in Chongqing, Yichang, Jingzhou, Xiangyang, Wuhan, Nanjing and Shanghai respectively. Up to now, BOH has established 118 hydrologic stations, 254 water level gauging sites, 25 rain gauges, two evaporation experiment stations, 226 water-quality monitoring cross-sections and more than 4200 fixed cross-sections for river channel survey on the mainstream Changjiang River and its major tributaries.
At present within the entire Bureau there are 432 persons with senior professional ranks, in which 47 are of professorial ranks, and 451 persons with middle professional ranks. BOH has been awarded the Class A Certificate of Hydrology and Water Resources Investigation and Evaluation and the Certificate of Water Resources Assessment for Development Projects by the Ministry of Water Resources and the Class A Qualification Certificate of Survey and Mapping by the State Bureau of Survey and Mapping. In 2003, BOH was ISO 9001:2000 qualified.
For decades, BOH has provided reliable data and scientific products for the design and construction of a series of major hydraulic structures including Gezhouba Dam, Three Gorges Dam and the South-to-North Water Transfer as well as for river basin planning, city construction, environment protection and so on.
