On December 17, 2019, the Ministerial Meeting of Lancang-Mekong Water Resources Cooperation commenced in Beijing, China. Ministers from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam spoke highly of the great significance of the meeting. All countries expressed the willingness to strengthen consultation and dialogue, experience exchange and project coordination in water resources, enhance mutual benefit and trust, promote the implementation of the outcome of this ministerial meeting.
The First Lancang-Mekong Water Resources Cooperation Forum was held in Kunming, Yunnan Province from November 1-2, 2018. The theme of the Forum is Water Partnership for Sustainable Development, and the event aimed to build a platform for water policy dialogue, technology exchanges and experience sharing.
Participants in the Forum conducted in-depth discussions on the fields of sustainable development, utilization and protection of water resources, flood and drought disaster management, the water-energy-food nexus, international cooperation in water resources management, knowledge management and sharing of transboundary rivers. The Kunming Recommendations came at the conclusion of the First Lancang-Mekong Water Resources Cooperation Forum.
2The six Lancang-Mekong countries jointly established the Joint Working Group on Water Resources of LMC to coordinate the cooperation comprehensively. At present, more than 10 meetings have been held.
In June 2017, the Lancang-Mekong Water Resources Cooperation Center (LMC Water Center) was established in China in accordance with the Sanya Declaration of the 1st Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Leaders' Meeting. A total of four experts from Lao PDR and Viet Nam were assigned to work at the LMC Water Center for a short term in 2019. The LMC Water Center has played an important role in promoting technological exchanges, capacity-building and projects cooperation. In December 2019, the Memorandum of Understanding between the Lancang-Mekong Water Resources Cooperation Center and the Mekong River Commission Secretariat was signed with the witness of ministers from the six member countries.
